Ballyhoura Active Report 3rd December 2017

Ballyhoura Active

Last Saturday we had our trail run in Kilfinane we had a fine crew on the day. The weather was really suitable for running cold and dry. The group were anxious to get started and the route was dryer than it had been a few days before, but it was still sticky in spots. We finished at the Mill Bar and had some refreshments. People are great as I was shocked when two guys turned up on bicycles after cycling from Mallow and after the trail run hopped on their bikes and headed back to Mallow again. The distances that some people travelled on the morning was great. Thanks to all who supported us on the day, our next run on the trails will be in the new year, and Kilmallock AC will be the host club. They have a really lovely route picked along the Keale river from Ballyorgan.

There will be a trail run on the 21st of Dec in Glenbrohane at 7pm in the evening. This is an evening run and walk so bring the head torch. The Glenbrohane community council have been running this for the last few years and well over a hundred turn up regularly on the night. The 21st is the shortest day of the year and it is known as the Winter solstice walk, the route is short and steep and slippery in spots but it is great crack. So bring the good walking boots or running shoes, we normally add a bit on to the run on the trails to make it interesting. There is no set fee but there is a donation bucket and all moneys go to charity, this year Milford Hospice will benefit from the event, we have all had someone in Milford over the years and they have a fabulous staff and they do wonderful work so give what you can. The Galty Hillwalking radio group marshal the event and first aid and ambulance staff are always on standby and if you are lucky they will be doing a training on the night and simulating a rescue. There are refreshments after in the local bar (Fogartys)where tea coffee and even sometimes some hot chocolate, Christmas cake and loads of other goodies. If you haven’t done it, I can obviously recommend it, I will give more details next week.

Over the festive season we have the Mile dash in Galbally on Saturday the 30th of December at 1pm and there is also a 5km in Churchtown on the same day registration from 9.30am and running at 11am.
