Ballyhoura Active Report Week Ending 06/05/18

We had a great weekend in sport, Kilfinane was abuzz with activity as crowds descended for the Ballyhoura walking festival and the Ballyhoura Mountain Marathon, numbers were up on the running event as over 300 turned up to challenge themselves on the hills. There was an Ultra Marathon which was won by Brian Meskell in 5 hours 32 minutes, the full marathon was won by Tom Blackburn, the half marathon was won by Henry Brown and the 10km was won by Willie O Donoghue. Thanks to Coillte who allow us to use so many of their trails each year and thanks to the staff with Coillte and on the RSS scheme who made this event possible by keeping the trails open and maintained after all the wet weather and the wind storms. As the weekend progressed the heat rose and as people struggled on the trails of the Ballyhoura Mountains on Saturday the heat was a serious factor in Limerick on Sunday as hydration became a problem for a lot of people.

This Friday night 11th we have the second race in the Ballyhoura Active series hosted by Mooreabbey Milers AC as we head over to Galbally for a 7.30 start of the Michael Curley Cunningham 4mile Memorial race. We are expecting good numbers for this race as Curley was very well liked by everyone who knew him and with the perpetual Trophy up for grabs we hope some fast runners will turn up to challenge themselves and post a good time on the route, we have run this course for a county championship and the times have been fast. There will be refreshments after in the Community centre and if you want to register for the race just go on line and check it out on

Friday the 18th sees the third run in the Active series as we will be heading back across the border into rebel territory where Buttevant RC will host their first race in the Ballyhoura Active series. Buttevant is very central to both Cork and Limerick and this new and very vibrant new club, hopefully on the night they will make a few euro to help them develop and grow into a larger club.
