kilmallock Ac Club Notes Week ending 01/07/18

An Bru 5 Mile Road Race
On Friday evening our neighbouring club An Bru AC hosted their annual 5 mile road race which was race number 8 in the Ballyhoura series in undoubtedly the hottest conditions any of the 131 runners who braved the conditions have experienced for a road race certainly for races in this country. The thermometer was still @ a blistering 28 degrees Celsius as the race began @ 8pm. Despite the extreme heat our club runners all ran very well and it included an excellent PB from John Paul McCarthy who was first club runner home in a time of 31:41 which saw him finish 14th overall. Next home in 23rd place was Donie Dwane in a time of 33:27 a good effort only two days after completing the tough Lough Curra Trail race. Next was Niall Lynch in a time of 36 minutes in 41st place followed by Simon Reynolds having his first race for quite a while in a time of 37:14 for 51st place. Patrick Leonard finished 84th in a time of 41:19. Aisling Deady finished in a time of 43:33 with Sonya Ryan finishing in a time of 45:00. Our veteran runner Jerry Sheedy looked composed in his shades as he breezed around in a time of 45:32. Our hosts deserve a lot of credit for providing extra water stops, sponges, showers and rub downs after the race which helped make the experience more bearable for the runners. Well done to everyone who took part with happily everyone finishing without any heat related problems

MMRA Lough Curra Race.
On Wednesday evening Donie Dwane and Andrew Wormald made the trip to Lisvernane Co Tipperary to take part in the Lough Curra Trail race which is part of the summer league series run by the Munster Mountain Running Association. Temperatures were in the high twenties for the race which took the runners on a 400 metre climb on the first half of the 7.5K run ascending to the lake which sits in the shadows of Galtymore and Galtybeag. The race took the runners through a coniferous forest before ascending up a steep hillside past grazing sheep who barely registered an interest in the runners as they tackled the ascent before turning around and descending to where they started. With stunning views and an abundance of flora and fauna in bloom from the purple of heather to the white and pinks of Foxglove both the lads ran well on their 2nd time completing this race with Donie finishing 18th in 46:25 and Andrew finishing 38th in 55:55.

Tralee Parkrun
On Saturday Andrew Wormald and his son Joshua took part in the Tralee 5K parkrun with Joshua edging out his father finishing in 30:07 in extremely warm conditions. On Sunday Joshua took part in the 2K junior parkrun which he completed in 9:23 finishing 14th out of 81 junior runners. A B2B @ only 9 years of age in this weather is pretty impressive. We may have a future star on our hands.
