kilmallock AC Club Notes Week Ending 08.04.18

 Patrick Joins 100 Marathon Club

On Sunday Patrick Roche joined a pretty exclusive club when he completed his 100 marathon in UL. It was somewhat ironic that the bad weather that has played havoc with sporting fixtures this year was responsible or Patrick being able to complete his century in his home county as the back to back marathons he completed on Saturday and Sunday were rescheduled because of storm Emma. His times were 5:17 for Saturday’s run with a time of 6:14 for Sunday’s. Patrick has been a late convert to running with his marathons being achieved in a little over 3 years with his 100 being achieved in his 66th year.

His 100 include ultras, back to back, 3 in 2, 100K runs. He has also been a stalwart on our over 50 team competing in the county 4 mile since he joined the club as well as winning individual medals in his category. The most common word used to describe him by his club mate, fellow runners and friends would be a gentleman who is unfailingly respectful to all and seems to always have a smile on his face during a race regardless of the weather, injury or how he is feeling during a race. From all the club a huge congratulations and good luck with the next 100.

On Saturday we held our 5K Run4Adam which was a fundraiser for Club athlete Adam Lewis who will be part of Team Munster in this summer’s national finals of the Special Olympics. The Run also doubled as 5K run for this year’s C25K participants. The bad weather which has bedevilled this year’s event threatened to put a damper on the run but thankfully conditions eased before the off and we had a sizeable crowd of walkers and runners, young and old taking part. First man home was John Paul McCarthy with first lady Nuala Collins. Of our juveniles who ran the full 5K course Daragh Fenton narrowly edged out Ronan Collins in a sprint finish with Katie Clery the first juvenile female to finish. Results of those running are below with the full list of all walkers and runners on our Facebook page.

Adam Lewis with sister Shannon with the proceeds of our Run4Adam Fun Run/Walk

A significant amount of money was raised or Adam who took part in the walk with mother Estelle, father John and sister Shannon with his brother Jake also on hand to support. Grandmother Lena also played her part presenting medals to our juvenile runners who took part. The money raised will also help two of his pals Luke and Ben  @ Redhill school who are also part of Team Munster. Thanks to all those who helped make this a successful day including Tom Quinn in the lead car. Willie Fitzgerald, John Mortell and Sam Bishop or photographs, Ryan’s Supervalu for providing water and snacks after the run and all club members and others from the community who stewarded and otherwise ensured the smooth running of the event.
