Victory for Kilmallock Duo in Cahir Half Marathon

Last year was the first time that a team relay event was added to the Cahir half Marathon and the club had a notable triumph with PJ Carey and Tony McMahon recording a emphatic victory. Alas because of injury both runners were unable to line up in this year’s event but the club had  more than capable substitutes with John Paul McCarthy and Donie Dwane recording a victory in 1:28:03 winning comfortably by over 3 minutes and beating over 30 teams in the process. The race was run in very hot and oppressive conditions with many runners hopes of running fast times foiled by a combination of the heat and a hilly course. After a very strong first half by John Paul Donie took over in 2nd place with a bit of work in  to do in 2nd place but ultimately first place was secured by a handsome margin. John Paul has only being running with us for little over a year and a half and this victory only underlines his rapid rate of improvement. In Donie’s case it was his 4th run in 8 days and he kept up his recent good form by running a PB for the distance by almost 4 seconds a mile. Also running was Krzysztof Sikorski who finished in a time of 1:41:07 despite having to cope with a knee injury for most of the race. This saw him finish in 36th out of almost 250 finishers, an excellent result in the circumstances.

Lisvernane Trail Run

Wednesday evenings in the Summer are becoming synonymous with the MMRA Summer League and some of our own members have become regulars in these events. Last week saw the league visit the sleepy Tipperary village of Lisvernane in the Glen of Aherlow where there were two races on offer, a 6K short course and a 9K longer course with 200 metres of climbing through native and coniferous forests. As well as league regulars Andrew Wormald and Donie Dwane there were also a couple of Kilmallock men making their MMRA debut namely Pat (Bambi) Lynch and Niall Freyne. Niall and Bambi competed in the shorter race with Bambi finishing in a time of 38:56 for 5th place with Niall not far behind. In the 9K run Donie finished 24th in a time of 47:53 with Andrew in 49th place in 55:53.

Patrick Roche has been tackling shorter distances of late with at least one marathon he was entered in cancelled because of the current heat wave. On the weekend he stepped back up to his preferred distance in no uncertain fashion when he tackled the Ballina AC Back 2 Back marathons. The course took runners on a route around Mayo including around the banks of the famous river Moy. Patrick completed the Saturday race in approximately 4:30 and the Sunday race in 4:43.
