AN Brú AC is formed
An Bru AC was established in February 2014 and is based in Bruff, County Limerick which is also situated in the well renowned Ballyhoura Region of the South West .It is a relatively new running club which came about when a number of local running enthusiasts came together back in October 2013 as there had been a spike in the numbers of people running locally. On foot of this the wheels were put in motion about forming an Athletic Club in the area. A committee was established and the hard work began in earnest to get this club off the ground. After many meetings and several months the hard work paid off and An Brú AC was established and fully affiliated by Athletic Ireland on 11 February 2014.
It had been many years since there has been an Athletic Club in the Area so this was a great opportunity to encourage locals and people from surrounding towns and villages to become involved in this new club. This is now certainly the case and as of the end of the Calendar year 2014 An Brú had almost 140 members registered with Athletics Ireland ‘’ This will be a club for all levels of abilities for both young and old . Notwithstanding the health benefits of running there is a great comradery with this group and we try to make running fun for all. So regardless of what level you are at you are made welcome at An Brú as pointed by Club Chairman Seamus Hourigan ‘’.
To date we have completed many successful Club initiatives including a very successful Couch to 5km programme in April 2014.This attracted some 60 participants all of whom have stayed with the club as registered members and now compete at various distances and events in the Athletic Calendar. The was successfully managed by Paul Ryan who also happens to be Club Secretary. Our Fit for Life group started up again in April and we have over 60 people taking part again this year.
We also successfully took on our 5 mile road race as part of the Ballyhoura Series which attracted some 250 entrants and the feedback was very positive, this event will be held again this year on the 3rd of July and the race will be chip timed. An Brú AC is also a great supporter and advocate of the Great Limerick Run and had 30 athletes competing in last year’s race over the three distances. The highlight of this was the men’s team coming in 2nd place in the relay marathon in 2014 and 2015. This year’s Great Limerick Run took place Sunday 3rd of May. It was a great day for the club with 65 runners from the club taking part in all of the races. Our club was very well supported by our families and friends many members from other club who all encouraged us along all of the routes. The support we get is outstanding and we have a great rapport with all the other clubs in the area and we have made many great friendships.
The club also puts a huge emphasis on the Public Relations side of the club and have their own dedicated Facebook page. There are also regular updates and notes in the local papers which keep the community up to date on all club activity . This is under the expert guidance of club PRO Patricia Wade.
